The pattern is Morse code for JPL, the abbreviation for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., where the rover was designed and built, and the mission is managed.

Each digit is illuminated with two 1.8 x 2.5 mm LEDs in different colours.
Display is connected "instead" of the real IN-18 Nixie tube to Pete's SN18 single digit Nixie clock. Of course, the LEDs are powered from 12VDC, not from the Anode voltage
